The celebrations in honour of the national holiday – the Day of Turkmen Melon celebrated each year on the second Sunday of August were held throughout the country.
On Saturday, a science conference brought together specialists of the subdivisions of the Ministry of Agriculture, watermelon, melon and gourd growers, who had achieved outstanding results, renowned agricultural scientists, breeders and agricultural workers in the conference hall of the building complex of the agro-industrial sector of Turkmen economy. Specialists of the research institutes of the Academy of Sciences and the Turkmen Agricultural University also participated in the forum. The conference provided the platform for exchanging views on the ways to optimize the work on the breeding of new varieties of melon, watermelon and gourds.
Participants presented the reports on priority objectives and prospects of the development of this sector of agriculture, agrotechnology, watermelon, melon and gourd cultivation and the history of centuries-old fame of Turkmen melons.
In the afternoon, the forum participants held a retreat meeting on seed farming in Ak Bugdai Etrap, Ahal Velayat in an experimental field of the Research Crop Production Institute. Scientists discussed the ways to improve well-known melon varieties and their taste properties, increase their resistance to pests and diseases, enhance their transportability and extend the term of storage.
In the evening, the main festivities in honour of the Day of Turkmen Melon took place in the territory of the National Independence Park – on the stage of the Ashgabat Music Centre to pay a tribute of respect to Turkmen melon, watermelon and gourd growers and the result of their hard work – the ‘heavenly’ fruit – the Turkmen melon. The festivities were organized by the State Food Industry Association, the Ministry of Culture and the Ashgabat Khyakimlik.
The ceremony of awarding winners of the professional contest took place there. 25 workers received valuable gifts on behalf of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
Cultural and art workers, including soloists and folk groups from all the regions of the country and Ashgabat performed a festive concert in the framework of the celebrations.
