- says the folk wisdom, which became main idea of the Neighborliness Holiday, being annually celebrated on the first Sunday of December.

The folk proverbs: “Neighbor is a good support in difficult day”, “Choose neighbor not home” say about antiquity of the traditions of neighborliness. Being significant canon of the mode of Turkmen life, the neighborliness was asserted in mind of people not only with need in mutual assistance and support among neighbors, but also in striving of our ancestors to live in peace and cohesion with neighboring states and representatives of other nationalities.


Independent neutral Turkmenistan establishes the kindest relations with many world countries and nearest neighbors. Our neighborliness policy is aimed at maintenance of peace, security and sustainable development in the region. Turkmenistan will continue the constructive cooperation with neighbors and other countries in future as well. Its main purpose is the interests of entire humanity and maintenance of peace all over the world.


Neighborliness Holiday is not only symbolic tribute of honor of ancient tradition “gongshy okara”, when the neighbors share with each other the foods, but also symbol of peace, cohesion and concord of the Turkmen people. Nearly whole population of Turkmenistan participates in the Neighborliness Holiday. During this festivity, it is held the reciprocal exchange of delegations from different regions, which include the honorable elders, representatives of local public authorities and executive authorities, creative groups performing the concert programs. Of course, as tradition “gongshy okara” demands, a large festive table-cloth with national dishes and sweeties is laid as well. Diverse cultural program, sport competitions make the Neighborliness Holiday one of the brightest and favorite festivities of the Turkmen people.


“Welcome!” – “Hosh geldiniz!” – these words are heard on the Neighborliness Holiday in every house all over the country.
