An annual action to burn narcotic drugs seized by the Turkmen law enforcement agencies during the counter-drug operations took place in Kasamly Julge locality near Ashgabat.

Narcotic drugs packed in sacks and packages were burnt in the special furnaces. The action participants could throw a package of seized narcotic drugs into the furnaces which are constructed in compliance with international standards. The counter-drug action was held in accordance with the established procedure and monitored by law enforcement officers.

The participants emphasized that this important action became new evidence for Turkmenistan’s commitment to strengthening peace, stability and sustainable development and a significant contribution to global efforts to create the climate of security. It was noted that the international community welcomed Turkmenistan’s determination to combat illicit drug trafficking and its readiness to promote constructive international cooperation in this sphere.

It was also noted that the well-coordinated actions conducted by the Turkmen law enforcement agencies in close collaboration with local governments, health care institutions and public organisations had produced the actual results. In particular, a drug related crime rate and a number of drug addicts had been significantly reduced in the country.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has defined counteraction to illicit traffic in narcotic drug as a priority aspect of the domestic and foreign policy. Turkmenistan takes an active role in addressing this urgent global problem and sets a good example to follow for many countries of the world. The State Service on Drugs of Turkmenistan was established on the initiative of the Turkmen leader. The effective measures are taken in the country to combat illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and detect and prevent drug addiction under the working plan for 2011-2015 to counter illicit drug trafficking and provide assistance to persons addicted to drugs and psychotropic substances.

Turkmenistan as a signatory to the three UN conventions to combat illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances of 1961, 1971 and 1988 actively and effectively collaborates with the United Nations on a wide spectrum of issues in this field. In this context the membership of Turkmenistan in the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs for the period of 2012-2015 is of particular importance.

The counter-drug action organized by the Government and the State Anti-Drug Coordination Commission under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan vividly illustrated the determination of our state and society to respond to one of the most dangerous challenges of our times.
