Water in water storage reservoirs throughout the country is being accumulated these days to create water reserves which will allow meeting the needs of the national economy. According to the Ministry of Water Industry, about 2.7 billion cubic metres has been accumulated to date.

Successful implementation of the ambitious water projects promotes effective development of the agricultural sector and increases production of grain, cotton and other agricultural crops. Turkmen hydraulic builders are currently engaged in the activities to increase the capacity of the water storage reservoir "15 Years of Independence of Turkmenistan" and Hauzhan water storage reservoir on the Karakum River, which are the largest in the country. The construction of a new water storage reservoir on the Gozganchai River in Kaahka Etrap in Ahal Velayat. The capacity of the artificial water storage reservoir designed to collect mud water will be 5.2 million cubic metres, which will allows irrigating 1,500 hectares of fields. The capacity of the pond, which will meet the needs of local people in drinking water, is 500,000 cubic metres.

A new water storage reservoir in Kunya Urgench Etrap in Dashoguz Velayat with the capacity of 20.5 million cubic metres is under construction. The works to increase the capacity of the Mammetkyol water storage reservoir in Balkan Velayat are being carried out. The measures to consolidate the river banks, adjust the river bed ad repair the dams on the Amudarya River are being taken to protect the fields from flood waters. Zahmet-Turkmenkala machine channel in Mary Velayat is being reconstructed: new high power pumps from the world's leading manufacturers will be installed at its water-lifting stations. The large-scale projects implemented in Lebap Velayat include the reconstruction of Yylgynagyz machine channel. The new complex includes a new pumping station with the flow rate of 35 cubic metres and the technological system supplying water at the six stages of the 50-kilometre waterway, which allowed expanding sown areas on the right bank of the Amudarya.

After the first construction stage of the Altyn Asyr Turkmen Lake has been completed, collectors that discharge waste waters from the oases were joined into a high-performance hydraulic system. It resulted in significant improvement of the conditions of irrigated lands and prevention of waste water discharge into adjacent depressions and waterways. These measures help to improve the ecological situation in Turkmenistan and the region as a whole. The implementation of the second construction stage of the ambitious project, which opens up ample opportunities to recycle water waters for agricultural purposes, continues. This is particularly important given the scarcity of water reserves in Central Asia. Turkmenistan sets an example to other water users in the region in addressing the problem of disposal of drainage water.
