Novruz is the festival of unison of human with nature. According to the established good tradition, an active participation of Turkmen nationals in the nationwide tree planting campaign under the motto “Turkmenistan –a flourishing country” , our fatherland –a garden of germs’ has become a harmonious prologue to it. On the tree planting day in the entire country over 771000 saplings of coniferous and other species were planted.
For cattle breeders Novruz is connected with completion of lambing campaign. The results of their work are wonderful lambs which have also taken part in the role of participants of the festive script. Small boys did not let them as well as puppies of alabays go away jealously proving their fellows their superiority namely over their small fellow mates. And for cultivators the onset of Novruz means a start of spring field work. Just in few days the cotton sowing campaign will be given a start in Akhal, Lebap, and Mary provinces.
Like every other festival, Novruz is welcomed with bread and salt. Everywhere tablecloths are laid wide and various foods are prepared. Ancient traditions are still practiced and every housewife should prepare “semeni’ from sprouts of fresh wheat.

Celebration of international Novruz bayram in Akhal province began from the first days of spring in cities and villages of the region. So, among festive events were associated with the competition for the best masters among workers of the textile factory of Gokdepe etrap, the exhibition of young painters of the children art school of the city of Tejen. In all etrap and cities the competition of girls under the title “Lale bayram”, concerts, dramatized enactments, prepared by workers of culture and art were organized in honour of the festival. On a sunny day Novruz was welcomed in the vast god-blessed vicinity of Khivaabad of Kaka etrap. The traditions of the festival were displayed in the dramatized play which has turned into a colourful decoration of a medieval Turkmen village. Nature itself supported actors heating with mild sun rays, blowing light wind, spreading the aroma of first opening buds. The unique concert programs, interludes staged on the motif of Turkmen folklore and works of modern authors included on the repertoire evoked excitement and joy in spectators. On the day of celebration at the foot of the Kopetdag along with residents of Akhal province numerous guests from all parts of our country also welcomed Novruz. Here mass walks and large-scale dramatized performances took place. Jigits on Akhalteke horses , girls in festive attires ,women needle workers grazing flocks of sheep , camels on the background of the Turkmen village surrounded by flourishing nature , riding swings, best masters of art of the country presented spectators with their best plays and folklore programs. Numerous guests have become witness of horse games and other national sports and tasted traditional foods of the festival.
Balkan
The national holiday Novruz symbolizing the ever youthfulness, was held in the foot of the Balkhan mountains on the green meadows of mountains and in the city of Balkanabat, the administrative centre of Balkan province making a wide panorama of spring landscape of the renovated Turkmen land.
A range of white felt tents decorated with national carpets, exhibitions of articles of folk craftsmen , voices of newly born lambs , goats and camels created the familiar picture known from all from their childhood such as the national life mode and spring festive rituals which we have inherited from the remote past. Link between times and epochs are preserved in dramatized enactments and performance of folklore groups which reflected original national traditions and customs with which our nomads and cultivators welcomed Novruz in the olden days. White beard elders who have seen much during their lifetime, by weather conditions, behaviour of birds, observation of nature, position of celestial objects and national omens foretold the upcoming new year of agriculture and future harvest. A national proverb says “Novruz proposes how the year will be”.
In the course of the festival, unique master classes of folk craftsmen were held and there they visually demonstrated for the gathered people how coloured felts, fine carpets and other needlework are made. The rainbow colours of works reminded the spring rainbow which best matched with surrounding nature.
The most distinguished guest was Magtymguly Phyragy, the Turkmen poet and thinker whose 290th birthday anniversary will be marked this year. The actor playing as the poet read poems of the great compatriot of Balkan people devoted to spring, beauty of his native land, and kins. And of course, the main feature of the festival was a wonderful dance kushdepdi. In the dance not only members of folklore and ethnographic groups of the province but also numerous participants of the festival took part actively. They have also received an opportunity to try their luck in duzzum and yalyga tovusma games.

The start of the festive events devoted to the national spring holiday, Novruz bayram, in Dashoghuz city was given with a bright and unforgettable events among which was the opening of a new project. In the residential area Gulistan the opening of a new nursery school for 250 children took place with great solemnity and much pomp.
Concert programs on the eve of the wonderful national spring holiday with participation of famous musicians, dancers, bakhshis, popular folklore groups, eminent variety show actors and young gifted people took place in front of the grandiose buildings of Dashoguz state music and drama theatre named after Nurmuhammet Andalyp and velayat museum of history and local lore.
The welcoming of Novruz bayram on March 21 was held in the picturesque park named after Saparmyrat Turkmenbashi in the atmosphere of great solemnity. From early morning here hundreds of Dashoguz people gathered to mark the ancient and ever young national spring holiday, the festival of awakening and rejuvenation of nature , light, warmth, triumph of life and good hopes. All congratulated each other warmly wishing all the best: success in work for the sake of our fatherland, happiness and prosperity in every family. In the distant place one could hear joyful national songs and cheerful melodies, and heart-moving songs of bakhshis.

In Koytendagh etrap at the foot of mountain covered with green grasses and flowers a large festive concert was held with participation of best solo singers and creative groups of Lebap. On the day of festival the main festive events were organized in Turkmenabad in the park complex “Char bag”. Here numerous exhibitions of goods of city enterprises of light and food industries displayed their products. Workers of the city museum of history and local lore organized the mobile exhibition where one could see ancient copper, ceramic, and wooden household items, which our ancestors used in their everyday life as well as during Novruz bayram.
On the vast area covered with fine carpets a large festive concert was held. Sportsmen practicing many sports also demonstrated their sporting excellence. The best solo singers of Lebap performed their best songs glorifying our beloved land under the wise leadership of our national leader as well as bright spring holiday. Programs of dance groups and folklore groups from the city on the Amyderya and etrap were also welcomed with warm applaud.
Mary
Concerts, dramatized performances were organized on the squares and stadiums of cities and etrap as well as in the new equestrian sports complex in Vekilbazar etrap. The main arena of the festivity has become the territory of the geneshlik Galaymor of Serkhetabat etrap, one of the picturesque places where delegations from all etraps of the region came.
Poets read inspired poems on the greatness of cultural and historical heritage of the Turkmen nation. Children and the youth rejoiced riding on swings and telling wishes. Young jugits demonstrated their skills on horseback. Gifted students of the centre of children and youth performed small plays based on national fairy tales. Folklore groups and actors of comic genre, bakhshis, and dance groups, solo singers performed glorifying ancient Novruz, our fatherland and its vast lands and its open-hearted people.
Among wonderfully decorated tents and felt houses old traditions and customs typical of the Turkmen nation were displayed and national games which attracted the attention of all the present with festive prizes were a real highlight of the festival.
