The International Day of Older Persons: with respect and relevance

The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated all over the world, including in Turkmenistan on October 1. In our country this day is included in the national calendar of significant dates.

“The International Day of Older Persons has a worthy place in Turkmen society as a holiday that contributes to strengthening solidarity and unity. Reverence and respect for the elders, the elevation of their dignity is one of the noblest principles bequeathed by our ancestors,” President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said in his congratulatory address to all representatives of the older generation.

Focusing on the great role of the elders in bringing up the younger generation, the Turkmen leader said that they were the school of high ethics and morality, generosity, respect for national values and customs.

Emphasizing that representatives of the older generation were wise counsellors in ensuring the harmonious development of society, strengthening the unity, cohesion, national integrity and bringing up patriots of the Fatherland, the President wished them good health and a long life happy prosperous and peaceful life.

In our country older people are surrounded by care and support; they take an active part in public life and nationwide events; all new initiatives are brought to life with their approval. Meetings of the Turkmen leader with the elders during his working visits to the regions and the official ceremonies vividly illustrate the concern of the Government to the elders, their opinion.

The International Day of Older Persons is another opportunity to pay tribute of respect to our mothers and fathers for their labour for the benefit of society and appreciate their contribution to enhancing the economic growth of the country.
