Medical industry: high technologies, local raw material

According to the State Development Program of medical industry of Turkmenistan within 2011-2015, the industrial complex on production of highly efficient medicinal drugs as well as other articles for medical purposes is successively expanded in the country. It is realized the reconstruction and re-equipment of existing enterprises, and created new production lines.

To date, the country manufactures over two hundred medicinal drugs, corresponding with the world standards of quality, safety and efficiency. These are antibiotics, various anaesthetic remedies, preparations used for treatment of diseases of heart, liver, kidney, gastrointestinal tract and many others. Particular place in the assortment of national pharmaceutical products is attached to extracts, syrups and mixtures of local medicinal plants. At that, a bulk of drugs is sold to consumers in the pharmacies by prescriptions at a discount of 90% from their price.

Analysis of the resources of medicinal plants, natural minerals, various clays and sea salts with health-improving qualities shows that national medical industry has wonderful possibilities for expansion of the list of medicinal drugs and pharmaceutical articles.


Recently, it was put into exploitation the plant on production of mineral water “Berzengi” and plant for production of disinfectants in Ashgabat. It is also worth mentioning the enterprise for production of sterile dressings in Dashoguz.

In the near future, it is planned to put into operation another two facilities of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry in Balkan province. These are the plant of packing the sea salt and healing clays in Jebel settlement and enterprise of iodine production in Bereket etrap.

All these are the regular steps on creation of import-substituting and export-oriented competitiveness of medical industry, formation of national pharmaceutical industry on the basis of high technologies.
