The Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan held a regular meeting to discuss the issues related to the upcoming elections to velayat, etrap and town halk maslahaty. The meeting was attended by the members of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda, representatives of the working groups established under the Central Commission and the media and national observers.
The registration of candidates for velayat, etrap and town halk maslahaty has been recently competed. A wide alternative basis is the major principle of this socio-political action. As was reported, 512 and 3,012 candidates had been nominated respectively for 240 mandates of velayat halk maslahaty and 1,480 etrap and town halk maslahaty.
Currently, the future elected representatives of the people are participating in the election campaign, presenting their programmes on equal terms and conditions to voters.
Candidates for velayat, etrap and town halk maslahaty represent the spheres of education, science and culture, health care and social welfare, various sectors of the national economy, including industry, construction, transport, communications, agriculture, etc. Favourable and equal opportunities for meetings with voters and speaking at election meetings, conferences and assemblies and in the media are provided to all candidates.
As was reported, members of the polling stations were elected for a five-year term.
A total of 2,485 polling stations were opened in 240 constituencies throughout the country, including 345 – in Ahal Velayat, 273 –in Balkan Velayat, 504 – in Dashoguz Velayat, 551 – in Lebap Velayat, 546 – in Mary Velayat and 266 – in Ashgabat.
In preparation for the election campaign to velayat, etrap and town halk maslahaty, members of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda conducted a series of training seminars on the provisions of the new Election Code of Turkmenistan, the duties and obligations of members of election commissions and the election procedures for members of velayat, etrap and town election commissions in the regions.
A total of 2,826 national observers were registered. Of them, 664 observers were nominated by the Democratic Party, 291 – by the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, 60 – by the Agrarian Party, 682 – by trade unions, 385 – by the Women’s Union, 557 – by Magtymguly Youth Organisation and 187 – by candidates for velayat, etrap and town halk maslahaty.
Other organisational issues were considered and the decisions were adopted at the meeting of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda.
