In capital, in a building of Agro-industrial complex of Turkmenistan, it was held a final round of national competition among the masters-melon growers organized by the State Food Industry Association and Ministry of Agriculture of the country.

The jury announced the winners of competition in each of five nominations – “Golden melon”, “The largest watermelon”, “The largest pumpkin”, “Fanciful gourds” and “Master-selector”. Twenty-five participants, representing all provinces of the country, showed the results of their work - weighty melons, very heavy pumpkins, huge watermelons. Not always, the kilograms solve the matter. The main criteria of estimation were quality, flavoring features and other advantages of gourds.

Here, it was presented all variety of watermelons, melons and gourds, as well as juices and jams from sunny fruits. Double, as though coalesced, melons became unique “exhibits”.

Jury members, which included the representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, attentively estimated fruits, which were weighed and tasted.

As a result, the tastiest was a 16-kilogram melon grown up in Ahal. In “watermelon” nomination, the winner was a fruit with weight 31 kg from fields of Murgap oasis. And the largest pumpkin - 39 kg - has arrived from Dashoguz province.

Notable masters represent among nominees on selection, and here again it was very difficult to jury member to choose the best. Exposed on competition gourds from prizewinners from all provinces of the countries drew the most steadfast attention of experts and fans. Here, it was possible to see melons of different forms, with longitudinal dents like a pumpkin, with green strips, veins, colours of these fruits were from green, yellow, and brown to white.

In this nomination, the oldest melon grower of Turkmenistan, who is engaged in favorite business for 44 years - Omurguly Ahmedov from Sayat etrap of Lebap province became the winner. The elder has reared numerous sorts of a melon and watermelon. The most known is a sort of watermelon “Jeyhun”, which was twice awarded at the international exhibitions. There are also new works - late and early ripening watermelon sorts.

- Modern scientists affirm that Turkmen melons principally differ from others cultivated in other countries with a similar climate, first of all, by juiciness and sugar content, - said Omurguly Ahmedov. – Even today, the scientists argue about secret. But it is not possible to grow up such sweet and fragrant melons anywhere else, even carefully copying the technology of cultivation of gourds from Turkmen masters. Perhaps, all secret is in the hot sun or composition of Amyderya waters, long-term experience and skill of national melon growers or simply in love of the farmer for his work. Thinking of work of national selectors-melon growers, I often remember rare sorts as well, the seeds of which can be found only at enthusiasts. After all, such collection are national wealth and should be returned to hands of experts, in order they provide these grades wide practice.

… More and more tenants take part every year in competition in honour of "queen" of melon fields that testifies the increased interest to cultivation of gourd cultures. This year the competition is conducted already for the twenty-second time. New sorts of gourds have been raised within this time, as well as the generation of hereditary melon growers, successors of traditions of agriculture has increased.
