The elections to the Mejlis in Gunesh electoral district No. 7 and Dostluk electoral district No. 8 in Ashgabat and elections to the Gengeshi in all regions of the country were held on August 16.
13,528 candidates to Gengeshi members were registered. The nomination of candidates was initiated by the political parties, public organisations and associations and groups of citizens. 6,041 electoral districts were formed and 1,828 polling stations were opened in the territories of towns in etraps, settlements and gengeshliks for the elections to Gengeshi.
According to the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan all the polling stations in the electoral districts were opened simultaneously. Of them, 328 polling stations were opened in Ahal Velayat, 154 – in Balkan Velayat, 432 – in Dashoguz Velayat, 428 – in Lebap, and 486 – in Mary Velayat. The divisional electoral commissions registered a total of 2.214 million voters eligible to vote in the election to Gengeshi.
51,705 voters eligible to vote in the election to the Mejlis were registered in the two electoral districts – Gunesh electoral district No. 7 and Dostluk electoral district No. 8 in Ashgabat.
92.88 per cent of voters gave their votes for the members of Genegeshi and 91.96 per cent of voters gave their votes for the national parliamentarians by 19.00. The results of the elections will be announced in the near future.
