A press conference on the interviews that President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov had given to the Turkmenistan Journal (Russian Federation) and the TRT Broadcasting Company and the new agencies Jihan and Turkiye-Zaman was held for Turkmen and foreign journalists in the conference hall of the State News Agency of Turkmenistan.

The correspondents of foreign news agencies and leading international editions accredited to the country, the representatives of the national newspapers, journals, TV and radio channels, the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan and students participated in the meeting.

It was noted that in the interviews the newly elected President of Turkmenistan set forth his views on critical issues regarding global and regional development, evaluated the achievements our country had gained during the years of independence and the tasks to be fulfilled and defined the objectives and priorities of the domestic and foreign policy of Turkmenistan in modern conditions.

Answering the journalists’ questions, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov dwelt upon the complex and large-scale changes he launched five years ago in his first term of office to ensure the progress of the country. Particular attention was paid to the democratization processes in the Turkmen society that were embodied in the adoption of the new Constitution of Turkmenistan in 2008 and modernization of the national legislation.

“In early 21st century Turkmenistan has reached the level of prosperous, highly developed and competitive countries. In recent years our country has made remarkable progress and turned into a strong state,” emphasizes President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov providing the specific examples of the dynamic pace of the ongoing reforms in Turkmenistan.

At the new historical stage Turkmenistan is to fulfil the more ambitious tasks of social and economic development. The state policy priorities set forth in the Turkmen leader’s election programme underlie the strategy for industrialization of the national economy and establishment of industries with the complete manufacturing cycle. In addition to achieving the macroeconomic indicators this strategy will allow creating new jobs for growing population and eventually improving the standards of living of Turkmen citizens.

Specific steps will be taken to create a favourable investment climate in our country, increase the state support for small and medium enterprises and promote international cooperation and economic integration. As before consistent measures will be taken to widely apply innovations and scientific and technological advances and train highly qualified specialists which “gives rise to a new generation of highly educated broad-minded specialists.”

Dwelling upon the economic strategy of Turkmenistan, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that its ultimate goal was to improve the people’s welfare. “The state will enhance social protection of citizens, ensure the high standard of living and the quality of healthcare and education and guarantee access to and mass satisfaction of cultural and spiritual needs,” said the Turkmen leader.

In the sphere of international affairs Turkmenistan “consistently pursues the peace-building and good neighbourly policy and actively contributes to the work towards cohesion and sustainable development of the international community.” This is the aim of its initiatives to maintain peace and stability in Central Asia and the Caspian Basin that have been welcomed and supported at a global level. Our country has its own views on the critical issues on the global agenda such as universal disarmament, promotion and protection of human rights, environmental protection, food security and mitigation of the negative effects of the global financial and economic crisis.

Multifaceted cooperation with the United Nations remains an implicit strategic priority for Turkmenistan. “We view the UN as a key instrument of the modern system of international cooperation, a guarantor for preservation and maintenance peace and balance of interests in the world arena and stability of the international security system in modern conditions,” noted President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

These interviews having drawn a wide response highlight the objectives and aims of the Turkmen leader’s policy the essence of which is laconically and impressively illustrated by the principle “a state for the people”. The conference participants emphasized that these interviews were an important source of information giving a deep insight into the pace of the ongoing reforms in the country spotlighting the way of independent neutral Turkmenistan towards new heights of progress and prosperity.
