The training was dedicated to the study of registration method of the birds of prey. It was organized by the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Environment Protection and Land Resources jointly with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) of the Great Britain. Researchers of nine Nature Reserves of the country participated actively in the training.

In recent years, the scientists of the most of countries of Eurasia and Africa pay great attention to the protection of birds of prey, including - birds – scavengers, which play in nature the role of regulators of number of small rodents as well as “nurses” of nature, cleaning the forests, fields and mountains from remains of ungulates, thereby preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Unfortunately, in all places, the number of birds of prey began to decline sharply. Many birds are already inscribed in Red data Book. For example, the species such as osprey, Pallas's Fish Eagle, bearded vulture, black vulture, serpent eagle, imperial eagle, golden eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, have become rare in our country, therefore, they were inscribed in the Red Data Book of Turkmenistan and the IUCN Red List.

Territory of Koytendag State Nature Reserve was chosen for training. Koytendag Mountains, deep gorges and blooming foothills are rich not only in natural monuments. At any time of the year, it is possible in wild conditions to find the rare representatives of avifauna, ungulate and other species of wildlife. It is no accident that the most eastern nature reserve of the country was nominated to be inscribed into UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Teaching of the theory and practical training on registration of birds of prey were held by ornithologists of the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna of Turkmenistan. They informed the researchers with descriptions of nests, detection methods of birds of prey, areas of their distribution, migration routes. Experienced ornithologist from Bulgaria Petar Yankov delivered a report before employees of the nature reserves. International expert highly appreciated the rich avifauna of Koytendag. He noted that its gorge - a suitable place for such trainings and seminars on ornithology, since here, it is possible to look simultaneously after 4-5 species of birds of prey.

Field trainings on birds’ registration were conducted on the territory of Hojapil, Hojagaravul Nature Reserves - in the gorges Daraydere, Suvdoker and Hojachilgazbaba. These gorges of canyon type surrounded with high cliffs and rocks with small caves and niches are favorable for the nesting of birds of prey. The training participants looked after not only highly soaring birds of prey in the sky, but found their nests. In Daraydere gorge, it was found and registered the places of habitation and nesting of vulture, golden eagle and other birds. In Hojachilgazbaba gorge, the training participants examined the nest with an egg hatching Griffon vulture.

The use of modern methods of monitoring of birds of prey, which were introduced to the scientific staff of reserves, will allow collecting valuable scientific data on status of birds of prey in Turkmenistan, which will be used in the development of measures for their protection as well as the publication of the Red Data Book of Turkmenistan.
