On June 26, Turkmenistan hosts International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

On December 7, 1987 the General Assembly is one of treaties founded on 26 June as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This decision adopted on the basis of recommendations of International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held on 26 June 1987, becomes a prove of the strive to consolidate international efforts to form state community free from drugs.

The history of drug control is counted more than 100 years. However, today this harmful habit is one of the most fearful phenomena of current time. The UN General Assembly recognizes that despite activization efforts of international community yet the drug represents threat not only for health and well being of people, particularly young ones, but also for national security, state sovereignty and its sustainability development. Today, it is time to hold task oriented work to fight against drug abuse having been coordinated by UNODC.

The rapid drugs spread is considered as multi level disaster with heavy consequences from demographic to criminalization of economy, social and political areas. Currently, it is time to develop joint action program aims to create effective barriers of international narco-traffic. UNODC in cooperation with state governments realizes projects on prevention and drug control.

The basis of taken measures to resolve this issue is International Convention on Drug Control. The UN strives to move accents in resolving control substances are fully compliant with the international norms in human rights. It is necessary to find alternative penalties for those who use drug substances, and focus the efforts to toughen up penalties for citizens spreading drugs.

It is necessary to take into account the correlation between illicit drugs and violence, corruption and terrorism. It is required to double efforts aimed at prevention of delivery of chemical substances which serve as the basis on preparation of illicit drugs.

Application of balanced approaches is not possible without identity of purpose in the framework of international community, including the UN, the civil society and states government.

In this context, Turkmenistan is a place where promotion of intellectual and spiritual growth, healthy life style, development of mass sportive movement and brought-up of harmonious development of young generation becomes a priority areas of public policy, and can serve as worthy example. The country is the active member of International Convention of UN on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking of regional and international projects.

International Day of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is dedicated to awareness campaigns aims to public education, firstly young people on utilization of harmful drugs and its consequences, promotion of healthy life style, and highly spiritual way of life. With efforts of Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, Ministry of Internal Affairs in conjunction of drugs specialists, public representatives, authorities it is held conferences and round tables dedicated to issues on usage of forbidden substances, treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts. Concerts, sport competitions, fresh mobs and other activities with motto “No Drugs!” held by Youth and nonprofit organizations.

Having celebrated International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, we attach great importance on necessity to balance approach to resolving global issue of current trends. Sustainable development can and must act as catalyst of acting steps in this direction.

UNODC activities in the region aimed at prevention, multi-aspect efforts to drug control. This approach is the effective investment in health and well-being of young generations, in their successful and healthy prospective.
