Under the shadow of the Gujum

One of the most beautiful trees growing on the territory of the city of Dashoguz are gujums. They have a lush dome-shaped crown and, due to the dense shade, serve as a reliable refuge from the heat. Local elders claim that gujums, or elms, are able to effectively purify the air.

They have a strong and well-developed root system, which provides them with endurance and adaptability to local climatic conditions. These trees can reach a great height in growth and are considered centenarians; miraculous powers were even attributed to them in the old days. In the past, craftsmen made furniture, various household utensils and wooden fakes, musical instruments from their hard and high-quality wood. Although Gujum is less common than other types of trees in the city today, it can still be found on the streets and in the city park. The old-timer is treated very carefully and properly cared for.

Dashoguz today has a rich assortment of green spaces. In its garden and park composition there are many types of ornamental and coniferous trees and shrubs, including several beautiful varieties of arborvitae; ash, mulberry, poplar, jida, catalpa and even tamarind are found here. In recent years, horizontal juniper and decorative barberry have appeared in the city. The creation of a beautiful landscape design on the territory of the administrative center of the region is also facilitated by the fact that the city trust for cleaning and landscaping of the territory has its own base for the production of the necessary planting material, which includes a five-hectare greenhouse and an open nursery for seedlings.
