Joint Efforts to Tackle Climate Change in Central Asia

On October 18-19, in Tashkent, the Republic of Uzbekistan, in a hybrid form, the 3rd Meeting of the Regional Working Group (RWG) was held to discuss the “Regional Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change in Central Asia", developed by GIZ as part of the German Federal Foreign Office’s “Green Central Asia” initiative and GIZ Regional Programme “Integrative and Climate-sensitive Land Use in Central Asia”.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, representatives of relevant ministries and state agencies of all countries in Central Asia. Representatives of the Interstate Commission for Sustainable Development (ICSD) and the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) also took part in the meeting. The Turkmen side joined the event online.

During the 2nd meeting of the RWG held on July 7 in Tashkent, the parties agreed on the title, structure and format of the future regional document. The Regional Working Group approved the document as a strategy called: “Regional Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change in Central Asia". In accordance with this, international experts prepared a pre- Draft Strategy, which was shared with the state authorized bodies and national experts to consider and give their comments and feedback.

The RWG 3rd meeting was aimed to jointly discuss the first draft of the “Regional Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change in Central Asia”, agree on its goal, objectives and strategic priorities / directions for which adaptation measures should be developed.

Based on the recommendations and proposals received from representatives of the Central Asian countries during the meeting, the document will be finalized by the “Green Central Asia” initiative regional experts and sent to the countries in December of this year for further consideration and approval.
