Turkmenistan implements an integrated approach to effective water resources management

In early February, the delegation of Turkmenistan, which included specialists from the Department of Environmental Protection and Hydrometeorology of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, its Hydrometeorological Service and the Institute " Türkmensuwlytaslama" under the State Committee for Water Management, took part in a two-day Regional Workshop on Monitoring, Assessment and Exchange information in the transboundary basins of Central Asia. The event was organized in Astana by the The International Water Resources Assessment Center (IWAC) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) with the assistance of the GIZ Green Central Asia Program. The purpose of the seminar is to assist in studying international experience in monitoring, assessing and exchanging information in transboundary basins and discussing the possibilities of strengthening cooperation between the countries of Central Asia in the field of protection and use of water resources in transboundary basins.

Turkmenistan takes a comprehensive approach to the issues of effective water resources management, taking appropriate steps to address specific national challenges, developing regional cooperation and promoting water diplomacy at the global level. Practical measures for rational water use, cleaning reservoirs and canals from silt, introducing water-saving technologies are one of the constant topics of regular working meetings of the head of state with the hyakims of the velayats. At the meeting held on Monday, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov once again stressed that the rational use of water resources is the most important requirement for the agro-industrial complex and other sectors of the economy.

Earlier, at the February 3 meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, comprehensive measures were outlined to modernize the country's water supply system. The head of state ordered to analyze the state of affairs in the water sector, inspect the rivers and channels and, if necessary, clean and deepen them, begin preparations for the reconstruction and strengthening of the banks of the Karakum River, develop a project for the upcoming activities and determine the contractor for its implementation. It was also instructed to implement a major investment project for the construction of desalination plants in the Caspian Sea, to take appropriate steps to purchase modern dredgers and special equipment.
