A meeting of the Interdepartmental commission for international commitments of Turkmenistan in the sphere of human rights and international humanitarian law took place in the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan. Representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, a number of ministries and departments, public organisations took part in the meeting.
The meeting agenda focused on the offers on Turkmenistan’s accession to the UN Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. As was noted, our country, as a member of the United Nations Organisation pursuing the aim to contribute to achieving peace and security, assertion of high humanistic ideals and values, has accessed to a number of international treaties and conventions on humanitarian issues. It was noted that ratification of this Convention, and the further implementation of its provisions in the national legislation would promote enhancing democratic principles of life of the Turkmen society, guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of the Turkmen citizens.
Among the key issues discussed during the meeting was the draft of the Law of Turkmenistan on the National Red Crescent Society. As is known, the National Red Crescent Society is an independent public organization working on the territory of Turkmenistan in line with the principles on the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The outcomes of the report on the systematic work carried out in the country within the framework of implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights resolutions submitted for consideration of the United Nations Human Rights Committee.
The members of the Interdepartmental commission were briefed on the progress in implementing the National Programme for Early Childhood Development and School Readiness for 2011-2015 approved in May, 2011. This document was prepared by the relevant ministries and departments of the country jointly with international organisations, including the UN Children's Fund given the key aspects of the state policy pursued in this sphere.
