The International Scientific Conference “Nature of Turkmenistan: undiscovered wonders of Koytendag” dedicated to thorough study of the natural wealth and sights of the unique corners of nature of our country started in the administrative center of Lebap Velayat.
The conference brought together over sixty scientists from more than twenty countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Italy, Spain, Finland, Russia, and other countries as well as their Turkmen colleagues. Among them are specialists, who conducted scientific researches in Koytendag within the framework of the international scientific expedition.
The welcoming address of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was presented during the ceremony of opening the conference. The Turkmen leader noted in his address that the forum would play an important role in thorough study, preservation and promotion of the plant and animal kingdom of Koytendag, turning this amazing region into a center of tourism of our country.
The reports delivered within the framework of the plenary sitting focused on the priority vectors for cooperation of Turkmenistan and UNESCO, the assessment of the ancient landscapes that preserved the footprints of prehistoric murrains, and their potential as monuments of geological significance, as well as the prospects of the protective status of such objects. New facts about the footprints of dinosaurs found nearby the Hodjapil were presented, and the experience of investigating other objects was discussed during the meeting. The scientists paid significant attention to the issues of studying caves as unique ‘archives’ of environment, the significance, and history of researches and modern issues of studying and preserving the fauna of the Koytendag underground hydro systems, and other important topics.
According to Director of the UNESCO Office in Tehran Ms Tarja Virtanen, Turkmenistan is noted for its rich cultural and natural heritage. In this regard it was underlined the significance of cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNESCO on nominating historical, cultural and unique natural objects of our country that has received a powerful incentive for developing due to the efforts taken by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
Then the forum continued its work in five sectional meetings, where scientists presented reports dedicated to the wealth of the plant and animal kingdom of the region, its mineral resources and ecology, natural cultural and ethnographic sights. Particular attention was paid to the role and potential of the international scientific cooperation for the through study, protection of natural and cultural riches of Koytendag and development of the international tourism in the region.
Interesting information and materials about unique natural landscapes, amazing diversity of the Koytendag flora and fauna, its natural and ethnographic sights revealed during the expedition were presented within the framework of the international conference.
During the meeting the scientists and specialists discussed the prospects of international cooperation on establishing the National Geopark in the Koyten Gorge, its registration in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, and preparing nominations for including the Koytendag Reserve to the World Heritage List.
