The delegation from the International Monetary Fund led by Bjorn Rotter visited Turkmenistan and held meetings at ministries and departments as well as with representatives of the Parliament and the private sector. The main themes for discussion included the assessment of the economic situation and the development prospects of Turkmen economy.

Upon concluding the visit, Bjorn Rotter presented the mission statement, underscoring that the high rates of economic growth had been maintained in Turkmenistan over the past decade. The IMF welcomed the fact that the official authorities of our country had taken advantage of high oil and natural gas prices to increase per capita income by more than twice through the well-planned development of the hydrocarbon sector. This measure made it possible to place large-scale public investments, including in the social sphere. The mission statement also focused on the priority Turkmenistan was giving to the diversification and development of the private sector so as to create more promising and sought-after jobs for Turkmen youth.

Stressing that three shock factors in 2014 led to the deterioration in external economic conditions in the Central Asian countries, the IMF mission welcomed the decisive response economic measures taken by the official authorities of our country. It was noted that the economic diversification strategy together with devaluation effected in January 2015 had given a strong impetus to a number of sectors, in particular natural gas processing and agro-industry.

According to IMF experts, “significant resources in the Reserve Monetary Fund and the Stabilization Fund enable Turkmenistan to address current challenges and will contribute to maintaining high GDP growth rates – higher than those in other countries of the region –most likely, during the long period of lower energy prices.”
