The last track skeletons were laid at the Akina station (Islamic Republic of Afghanistan) – the railhead of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan steel trunk. The construction of the first stage of the Asian international railway transport corridor – the Atamurat-Ymamnazar (Turkmenistan) – Akina (Afghanistan) launched in June, 2013 completed.
The total length of this section of the transnational route is 88 km, 85 km of which run through the territory of our country, and three more kilometres – between the border points Ymamnazar and Akina. The last rail on this section were laid on the territory of Afghanistan.
The ceremony taken place in Akina (Afghanistan) brought together the heads of the railway agencies of the two countries as well as construction specialists, journalists and the representatives of local authorities.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Special Envoy to the President of Afghanistan on the CIS countries Shakir Kargar noted that the development of transport communications in the region would strengthen the trade and economic cooperation, the effective implementation of the transit and transport potential of our countries, their integration into the system of modern international economic relations.
Minister of Public Works Mahmood Baligh emphasized that cooperation with Turkmenistan in the sphere of the establishment of the railway network would not only be beneficial for the neighbouring countries and peoples, but also would contribute to widening the mutually beneficial regional and international economic cooperation that meets the interests of peace, stability and sustainable development all around the world.
Those taking part in the ceremony greeted the symbolic moment with the storm of applause - a powerful tracklaying machine of the construction units of the Ministry of Railway Transport of Turkmenistan laid the last rails and sleepers on the roadbed. Modern technology and equipment of Turkmen road builders and the competent and timely organization of works made it possible to significantly accelerate the implementation of this ambitious project.
According to those speaking during the ceremony, Afghanistan expects significant social and economic impact. Due to the transnational railway and its infrastructure, the layout of the adjacent territories dramatically changes and their industrial development intensifies. The railway is to become an important link in the international freight traffic, to intensify trade relations between the countries in the region and offer a powerful impetus to restore the economy in Afghanistan as well as contribute to the solution of social issues and ensure the employment among the local population.
The construction works at stations, engineering structures and auxiliary facilities have been almost completed. Construction specialists of Turkmenistan jointly with the specialists of the Altcom Company (Ukraine) erected two railway bridges on the railway section over the wide Karakum River. The width of the both bridges is 5.8 metres, whereas the length of one bridge is 363 metres, and the other - 256 metres.
The importance and potential of the new railway, which will connect Turkmenistan and Afghanistan with the economic ties, is proved by the intense freight traffic flow passing through the Ymamnazar customs post. Turkmenistan exports oil products, liquefied gas, carbamide, cement, grain, licorice, carbon, cotton seed oil, Saradja wool, etc. Moreover, large transit consignments of humanitarian and other cargoes pass through the Ymamnazar customs post. Citrus and fruits transiting through Afghanistan are registered as import. A number of food products are transported to the neighbouring countries of the region and Europe through territory of Turkmenistan.
The new railway will significantly contribute to increasing the trade turnover between the two countries.
The Atamurat-Ymamnazar-Akina railway, in its turn, is the first section of the Asian international railway transport corridor, which will be connected to the extensive railway system of China and through it - to the rapidly developing states of the Asia-Pacific region.
Turkmenistan promotes creation of transnational transport corridors in all perspective directions. The Global Sustainable Transport Conference, which will be organized jointly by Turkmenistan and the United Nations in Ashgabat will be dedicated to this important sphere.
The framework agreement on construction of the Atamurat-Ymamnazar (Turkmenistan) - Akina-Andhoy (Afghanistan) railway was signed between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on May 28, 2011. The Memorandum on the implementation of the project was signed within the framework of the trilateral talks between the leaders of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan on March 20, 2013 in Ashgabat.
