Abundance of Vegetable Production as a Guarantee of the Country’s Food Independence

In the year held under the motto “Independent Neutral Turkmenistan – the Homeland of Purposeful Winged Horses,”farmers of the Murgap Valley are tirelessly working to cultivate rich harvests of vegetable crops.

In the era of the Revival of the new epoch of the powerful state, the opportunities created for farmers within the framework of programs initiated by the President of the country to develop the agricultural sector contribute to achieving significant success in this field. One of the main goals of agrarian reforms is to supply the population with domestically produced vegetables and melons. Large-scale efforts are also being carried out in the Mary velayat to accomplish these objectives.

Employees of the Miwe Agricultural Industrial Association of the Mary velayat are contributing to the saturation of the market with locally produced goods. Farmers’ associations, tenants, private farms, and entrepreneurs who have contracts with the association have accumulated extensive experience in cultivating various types of vegetables, especially potatoes and onions.

In 2026, vegetable and melon crops in the Mary velayat will be sown on an area of 28,170 hectares. Among them, the main crop—spring potatoes—has been planted on 9,000 hectares, with a planned harvest of 126,000 tons. From 2,700 hectares allocated for spring onions, a yield of 67,500 tons is expected. Tomatoes have been planted on 985 hectares. It should also be noted that carrots and cabbage are showing steady growth and yield accumulation among the spring crops. In addition, from 4,315 hectares of melon crops, it is planned to harvest 86,300 tons.

The first results of the vegetable growers’ diligent work in the velayat have already appeared, as the spring potato crop has begun to ripen and is currently being maintained in accordance with agrotechnical requirements. Preparations for harvesting are also underway. Farmers and tenants who have grown a rich potato harvest this year plan to achieve yields of 140 centners per hectare.

According to the approved plan, the Miwe Agricultural Industrial Association also aims this season to plant winter potatoes on 3,900 hectares, onions on 2,700 hectares, and sow legumes on the following areas: mung beans on 1,500 hectares, beans on 410 hectares, and sesame on 440 hectares.

By purchasing vegetables and melons grown by tenant farmers, the association supplies them to state institutions and enterprises, kindergartens, and military units. An important role in preserving the harvested produce in fresh condition is played by the refrigerated storage facility belonging to the Miwe Agricultural Industrial Association of the Mary velayat, which has a capacity of 3,000 tons.
